How Custom Suit Fittings Work: What Happens at Each Stage

By Oslo Tailor, Patong · Published 5 October 2026 · Updated 5 October 2026

A made-to-measure fitting is a try-on of your partly or fully made suit while the tailor checks balance, shoulders, sleeves, waist and length and marks what to change. You should expect to move, sit and raise your arms, and to say what feels wrong.

What a fitting is for

A fitting is the point where a pattern cut to your measurements meets your real body. People are not symmetrical and a tape measure cannot capture everything, so the tailor needs to see the suit on you to adjust it. This is the biggest difference between made-to-measure and a suit from a rack.

Stage 1: Measuring

This is not technically a fitting, but it sets the foundation. The tailor measures your body, and notes things like one shoulder sitting lower or a forward-leaning posture. Be honest about how you like clothes to feel: close, or with room to move.

Stage 2: The first try-on

The suit is partly constructed. The tailor will usually look at:

  • Shoulders: the seam should end where your shoulder ends, with no dimples or pulling.
  • Collar: it should sit against your neck without gapping.
  • Chest and waist: the jacket should close without strain and should not billow.
  • Sleeve length: typically a little of the shirt cuff shows.
  • Jacket length: usually covers the seat of the trousers, depending on style.
  • Trousers: waist, rise, thigh room and the break at the shoe.

The tailor will pin or chalk areas to change. Do not worry if it looks rough. That is normal at this stage.

Stage 3: Adjustments

After the first try-on the garment is altered. For a suit, we can have it ready in 1 to 2 days after your fitting. This is why we ask for your departure date: it tells us how to plan the fitting and whether there is room for another try-on.

Stage 4: The next fitting

You try the adjusted suit. Ideally it now fits well and only small changes are needed. If something is still off, a further adjustment may be possible depending on your schedule.

Stage 5: Final check and collection

On collection you put the finished suit on one last time, check the details and take it home. If something small needs attention, say so before you leave the shop.

How to get the most from a fitting

  • Wear or bring the shirt and shoes you will wear with the suit.
  • Empty your pockets and take off your watch and belt if asked.
  • Stand naturally, not at attention.
  • Sit down, walk, raise your arms and try reaching forward.
  • Say what you feel immediately, even if it seems minor.

Signs a suit fits well

  • The collar lies flat against your neck and shirt collar.
  • The lapels lie flat rather than bowing out.
  • You can button the jacket without strain lines pulling from the button.
  • The back is smooth with no horizontal wrinkles under the collar.
  • Your hands hang freely and the sleeves do not ride up when you lift your arms.

When time is short

If you only have a few days in Phuket, plan the fitting visit for the earliest possible time and be flexible on the day. Because a suit can be ready 1 to 2 days after your fitting, a short stay can still work if you start early. Read how many fittings you need for timeline thinking, and what to bring for a checklist.

Common questions

How long does a fitting take?

Usually not long. A fitting is a try-on and a discussion, not an all-day appointment. Allow a little extra time so nobody feels rushed.

What if I do not like something at the fitting?

Say it right then. Tailors prefer to hear about a concern during the fitting, while the garment can still be changed, rather than after it is finished.

Can I bring someone along?

Yes. A second opinion from a friend or partner can be helpful, especially for a special occasion.

Do fittings cost extra?

Ask what is included when you get your quote. Knowing how many fittings are covered avoids surprises later. See also our prices page.
