Copying a Design from a Photo: How It Works with a Tailor

By Oslo Tailor, Patong · Published 5 October 2026 · Updated 5 October 2026

A tailor can make a garment inspired by a photo by studying its cut, details and fabric and adapting them to your measurements. Bring clear pictures from several angles, and expect an honest conversation about what can be matched exactly and what can only be approximated.

What “copy from a photo” really means

When you bring a photo, the tailor reads it like a set of instructions: the shape of the shoulder, the length, the number of buttons, the lapel, the pockets, the fit through the waist. The tailor then creates a pattern for your body that follows those features. The result is a garment in the same spirit, made to fit you, rather than a duplicate of the model’s outfit.

Which photos work best

  • A front view, a back view and a side view if you have them.
  • Close-ups of details such as pockets, buttons, cuffs, lapel or neckline.
  • Photos in good light, so colours are accurate.
  • Photos where the whole garment is visible.

A single small or blurry image makes things harder. If you only have one picture, say what the hidden parts should look like.

What is usually straightforward

  • Overall silhouette and length
  • Lapel style and button arrangement
  • Pocket styles
  • Trouser cut
  • Many dress shapes and necklines

What can be harder

  • Exact fabric: a pattern, texture or finish may not be available in the shop. We can show close alternatives.
  • Complex details: heavy beading, intricate pleating or unusual construction can add time and may need a simplified version.
  • Hidden construction: what you cannot see in a photo (lining, inside structure) will be agreed in conversation.

Your body is not the model’s

A garment that looks perfect on a model can look different on you. A tailor may suggest adjustments to proportions, such as changing the jacket length or the waist line, to suit your frame. It is worth listening to them. You can always say “I want it exactly like the photo”, and the tailor will explain the trade-offs.

Colour and fabric

Colours on screens are unreliable. Choose the fabric in the shop under real light. Our fabric guide explains how weight and fibre affect comfort in heat.

A note about other designers’ work

Taking inspiration from a style is normal. Please do not ask us to reproduce another brand’s logos, labels or trademarked patterns.

What to do at the shop

  1. Show the photos and say what you like most.
  2. Discuss what can be matched and what will be adapted.
  3. Choose fabric and be measured.
  4. Agree the fitting schedule around your departure date.

Common questions

Can you match a photo exactly?

We aim to follow the cut and details closely, and we will tell you where a close match is not possible, usually because of a specific fabric or very complex detail.

What if I only have a screenshot from social media?

That is a good start. Tell us anything the picture hides, like the back view or how long the sleeves are.

Can I combine details from two photos?

Yes, for example the lapel from one jacket and the length from another. The tailor will say whether the combination works on your frame.

Will it fit like the photo?

It will be cut to your body, so it can look different from the model. That is the point of made-to-measure.

How long should I allow for a design from a photo?

A suit can be ready 1 to 2 days after your fitting. For other designs it depends on how complex they are and on the shop’s workload, and a heavily detailed gown is a different job from a simple jacket. Give us your departure date and we will tell you what is realistic.
